Visakhapatnam, affectionately known as Vizag, is a city brimming with endless surprises waiting to be explored, discovered, and enjoyed. Whether you're diving into the crystal-clear waters of the Bay of Bengal, hiking through lush hills, wandering in dense forests, or delving into India's rich history, Vizag offers something for every taste. Among its myriad attractions, one standout gem is the Buddhist heritage site known as Bojjana Konda.

Located in the village of Sankaram, Bojjana Konda is a testament to India's captivating history that never fails to awe visitors. This significant tourist spot showcases the cultural richness and grandeur of our ancestral heritage, preserving artifacts that shed light on forgotten chapters of our past.

History of Bojjana Konda :

Bojjana Konda, originally named 'Buddhina Konda,' underwent a transformation over time to its current moniker due to the tongue-twisting nature of its original title. Dating back to the 4th and 9th centuries A.D., these hills bear witness to the diverse influences of Buddhism—Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana—on the village of Sankaram, once known as 'Sangharam,' meaning monastery. It was believed to be the epicenter of Buddhist culture in the region.

In 1906, British archaeologist Alexander Rea led excavations, uncovering treasures such as a two-thousand-year-old image of Buddha. Bojjana Konda boasts monolithic stupas, caves, and various artifacts, providing a window into ancient Buddhist practices and beliefs.

Architecture of Bojjana Konda:

Perched atop the eastern hill of Sankaram, Bojjana Konda features monolithic stupas surrounding rock-cut platforms, including the majestic maha stupa, constructed entirely of bricks. Archaeological excavations have unearthed ancient Buddhist coins and relics, offering insights into the site's rich history.

The hill is adorned with six intricately carved rock-cut caves, each showcasing unique designs and sculptures. The main cave, with its sixteen pillars and monolithic stupa, invites contemplation and exploration of ancient Buddhist artistry.
